Apr. 15th, 2013 12:05 pmThe days were passing uneventfully, but still showing signs that the year for Dave would indeed be a good one, at least compared to the last two. There were the usual island mishaps: everything annoyingly rhymed on Valentine's Day, but that could have gone far worse. And, there was the tribble problem to deal with. Dave still suffered the occasional nightmare thanks to the events of Halloween, but Maxxie's curtain was wonderfully still open for when those dreams came (and when they didn't).
The good overshadowed the bad, though. He has an awesome dog, awesome friends (two who are getting married at some point in the future), awesome classes and an awesome, gorgeous, amazing boyfriend. Dave reveled in it, hoping the good would keep coming as long as the island would allow it to. He didn't want to take any of it for granted.
It made him careless.
He learned, not too long into their relationship, that Maxxie doesn't do mornings like he and Major apparently do. It's part of why moving in together wasn't something Dave wanted to jump into. Still, the dancer's room was on the way up to and from their morning run, and it wasn't uncommon for Major to run into Maxxie's room to snuggle down with the other boy as Dave took his shower and went to his Monday morning classes. It wasn't even uncommon for Max to steal the mutt for a day and actually to teach him how to dance. He just checks on both of them around lunch time.
As Dave approaches Maxxie's floor, he can hear music playing from his room.
–A slow landslide and the world we leave behind; It's enough to loose your head, disappear and not return again...–
It's not something for a dog to dance to, but it's pleasant and powerful and it makes him smile. He loves coming in without the other boy noticing right away, and music tends to help with that. Dave loves to just lean into the doorway and watch as his boyfriend is lost in a drawing or checking himself out in the mirror. Speaking honestly, though, he loves watching his boyfriend doing just about anything.
–Now I know you're amazing; 'Cause all I need is the love you breathe; Put your lips on me and I can live underwater, underwater, underwater!–
A sharp little howl interrupts the melody, just before he gets to the doorway and his smile drops. Major is usually pretty well behaved with Maxxie. Pushing the curtain aside, Dave can see he wasn't exactly a good boy in his absence. Clothes have been strewn around, one of the pillows dragged down by the dog, obviously chewed on in one corner, along with Max's blanket and apparently the iHome set up that thankfully hadn't broken.
"Hey!" He goes over and gives his puppy a punishing bump on the noise to quiet him. Major just whimpers more pathetically before howling again. "Come on, boy, what the hell is the matter? Why'd you do this while Maxxie's out, huh?"
Come to think of it, Dave knows that Max would not have left Major alone long enough for him to do this.
–With a space boy high from the world I leave behind; It's enough to to lose my head, disappear and not be seen again–
He looks around the room again. Sees Maxxie's usual shoes chucked into the corner. Touches the mattress and knows that the bed's been empty for a while. Something cold washes over his chest as he realizes that Maxxie hadn't intended on leaving Major alone.
That he hadn't intended to leave at all.
–'Cause I need is the love you breathe–
"Fuck."
Dave touches his face and realizes that he's actually crying. He's been crying, probably before he fully realized that Maxxie wasn't on the island any more. His throat feels tight and dry as he tries to swallow, to breathe, and he collapses onto the bed. Something pokes at his thigh in the tangled sheets, and he finds the necklace he made for Maxxie's birthday: the night they first got together.
"Fuck."
The swear comes out as a raw sob this time and he curls himself up against the wall near, trying to will the tears to stop, praying for the pain to stop and for this place to give him back the first boy that's ever loved him.
The only response he gets is Major's whimper as he joins Dave on the bed, drowned out by the song still playing out on the floor.
–Put your lips on me and I can live underwater...
